Backlink Reports for Startups, Without a Subscription

Backlink Reports for Startups, Without a Subscription

Startups go looking for a cheaper SEO platform because the well-known suites are priced like a hire. The search usually turns into a feature checklist: backlinks, keywords, rank tracking, a site audit. The checklist feels responsible. It is also how a two-person company buys a product shaped like a ten-person SEO team.

If you landed here from a search for an Ahrefs alternative, the more useful question is which report you need this month. For most early teams the answer is a backlink report, a link-gap report, or both. A growing second question is which sites ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode cite when someone asks about your category. Those are reports you can buy one at a time. They do not require a subscription.

BacklinkScope sells those three reports to indie makers, freelancers, and small agencies. It is not a full SEO suite, and it is not a clone of one.

What a startup actually has to decide

Organic search matters early because a page can keep sending the right people after the ad budget pauses. The decisions in the first year are narrower than a platform tour suggests.

  • Which sites already link to you, so you know the baseline before you pitch.
  • Which sites link to a competitor and might link to a better page from you.
  • Whether the pages getting cited in AI answers are the same pages you are trying to rank.

Keyword research, title tags, and a crawl of your own templates still matter. They are different jobs, and they have their own tools. Google Search Console covers queries and clicks for a site you own. A desktop crawler covers broken links and missing titles. A keyword tool covers volume and difficulty when you are planning a content slate. None of that has to be rented inside the same monthly seat as a backlink list.

The failure mode is paying for the seat, opening it twice, and still not having a list of people to email.

The three reports, in startup terms

Backlink report. Name your domain, or a competitor's. You get the sites that link there and the pages those links point to. Founders use the competitor version as a map of who already covers the category. They use their own version to see whether a launch post, a directory, or a customer story did the linking.

Link-gap report. Name your site and two competitors who show up when your buyer searches. The report is the set of linking sites you do not have. That becomes the outreach list for the quarter. It does not invent keywords for you, and it does not rank your pages.

AI citation report. Name the prompts a buyer would type: "best tools for X," "how to do Y," the comparison your category always gets. The report lists sites ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode cite. For a startup, this is often the first time the team sees that an answer engine is quoting a review site, a docs page, or a competitor's blog instead of the homepage they keep redesigning.

One credit buys one of those. A pack is how a small team covers its own site, two competitors, and a handful of prompts without starting a subscription.

A first month that fits in a few credits

You can do this in an afternoon, then spend the rest of the month on the work the report cannot do.

Hour one: your own links. Buy a backlink report for your domain. Mark anything that looks accidental (a scraper, a footer credit, a mention you did not know about) versus anything a human editor chose. The second group is the proof you will reuse in pitches.

Hour two: the gap. Pick two sites that already show up for your category. They might be competitors, or they might be blogs and review pages. A link-gap report names sites that link to them and not to you. Before you spend a credit, preview the top rows of the gap. The preview is capped. The credit is the full list. Choose ten that a founder can actually email. Ignore the rest until those ten have a reply or a no.

Hour three: the answer engines. Write three prompts in the words your buyer uses, not your brand terms. An AI citation report shows which URLs get named. If a docs page or a comparison article keeps appearing, that is a page shape worth studying. It is not a promise that copying the outline will get you cited.

Then close the tool. Write the page you want those sites to link to, or fix the page you already have. The report's job was the list.

What to leave out of the stack

A startup SEO stack gets expensive when every "nice to have" becomes a line item.

Leave these out of BacklinkScope, because they are not in the product:

  • A rank tracker with daily positions.
  • A keyword database.
  • A crawler that audits your templates.
  • A historical index you query like a full suite.

Use Search Console for your own queries. Use a crawler you already trust for technical fixes. Buy keyword data from a tool that sells keyword data, on the month you are planning content. Buy the backlink or citation report on the month you are doing outreach.

That split is the point. You pay for the report you are about to use.

How to talk about it internally

Founders get stuck justifying software. A credit is easier to defend than a seat.

"We spent one report credit to see who links to the two sites above us, and here are ten pitches." That sentence has a cost and an output. "We subscribed so we would have SEO covered" does not. If the next month has no outreach and no citation check, you do not buy another credit. The absence of a monthly bill is the feature.

Freelancers can bill the same way. A client pays for a link-gap report as a line on the invoice, then pays for the outreach separately. You are not carrying a platform seat for a client who might pause.

A straight answer on scope

BacklinkScope will not replace a suite you use every day. It will not crawl your site, track rankings, or hand you a keyword list. It sells the three reports above, one credit at a time, to people who do not want a subscription for that answer.

Prices on the site are one-time packs. Card checkout is not connected yet. Requesting a pack saves the request and does not charge you. See the report credits.
